One important thing to look into is the effect of water to the edifice's structure and this does not necessarily have to mean leaked pipes. See if the land surrounding the house slopes away from the foundation as this feature allows water to run off from the residence and therefore prevents the weakening of the building's base. In addition, check for exposed electrical outlets and hanging wires as these are other potential threats. Request to have these covered immediately or you risk having you or any member of your family electrocuted. Also, check the drainage system if it can properly deal with excess basement water. Furthermore, pay close attention to the fireplace and chimneys which are direct sources of danger. Determine if the chimney has been cleaned since fire may start in any place where there is a concentration of carbon. Moreover, check if it opens and closes appropriately so as to ensure that no smoke gets stuck inside the living space. Finally, try to detect the presence of household pests like termites and vermin. On one hand, termites are threats to the very structure of the home while rodents like rats and mice chew on virtually anything their teeth can get into like electrical wiring, furniture, appliances, et cetera.
